Deepak Kaul’s "Dissent" is a compilation of 11 short stories conceived during The Times of India’s Write India Campaign. Drawing inspiration from prompts by eminent authors like Amish Tripathi, Chetan Bhagat, and others, this collection explores diverse societal themes, each story woven around protagonists facing solitude and adversity.

The anthology encompasses a range of narratives, with the initial stories, such as "Dissent" and "Hell's Angel," setting high expectations. However, these early tales falter in leaving a lasting impact. Yet, as the collection progresses, Kaul’s storytelling matures, evident in narratives like "L.C.A" and "Mirage," hinting at storytelling potential.

Among the stories, "Karma Agni" stands out, presenting a compelling narrative, while "Taboo" concludes on a perplexing note. The book cover lacks allure, and sporadic typos mar the otherwise engaging reading experience.

Despite its occasional inconsistencies, "Dissent" unveils Kaul's endeavor to craft unconventional tales. Although not uniformly profound, the stories offer pockets of intrigue and entertainment, appealing to readers seeking brisk, thought-provoking narratives.

In summary, "Dissent" invites readers into a realm of diverse themes and imaginative storytelling. While it may not uniformly captivate, it provides a glimpse into Kaul’s creative prowess and is a suitable choice for those seeking an escape into compelling short stories.
